Under Pressure Drilling

Under pressure drilling is the technique used to form new branch connections within pipework made from materials where welding is not possible, including cast iron, ductile iron, copper, plastic and asbestos cement. Using a mechanical clamp or branch tee, new connections can be drilled directly into the live pipe without interrupting flow, pressure or temperature.

When is under pressure drilling used?

The pipe material cannot be welded

A new connection is needed on a live system

Draining down or depressurising is not an option

Speed and minimal disruption are priorities

Suitable pipework materials

Cast iron Ductile iron Copper Plastic Asbestos cement

Benefits

No system shutdown required

Full flow, pressure and temperature maintained throughout

Fast and cost-effective using pneumatic equipment

Can be used alongside pipe freezing for a complete live-system solution
